How do I impact state legislation?

Senator Woodward invited us to watch how the real action happens in committee at the state legislature. When a bill comes up that impacts your business, it's time to take action. "There are three ways you can influence a legislator. 1. Write a letter, 2. Call, 3. Visit with other business members. #3 is the most effective approach." Contact the Chamber if you need help forming a group and we'll help you get connected with the right people. It's most effective to testify in person and meet with your legislator or the members of the committee where the bill is proposed. If it is killed in committee, the house floor never sees it.

Watch the weekly Advocacy Update for bills to watch or go to https://leg.colorado.gov/ to read bills, see the legislative schedule, and sign up to testify. You can testify online if you can't make the trip to Denver. When writing or preparing testimony:
  • Show up with gratitude for the efforts of the public servants you are writing/speaking to.
  • Present facts. The more your language includes subjective notions like "I think" or "what if" you start to lose credibility.
  • State who you represent, like "I'm one of xxx business owners in my region who will be impacted by this bill."

And if you are not sure where the Chamber stands or how to take a collective approach, contact our Legislative Alliance Ambassador Bill Brown.
